We're all on a journey.

Stick with me; I’m gonna use this hiking metaphor a bit.

The path through life leads up and down many mountains along the way.

Mountains represent challenges and obstacles we face and the triumphs we experience at the summit.

The valleys are the inverse; soul-crushing defeat, heartbreak, hopelessness.

If you’re anything like I was, you’ve tried to savor the peaks and rush through the valleys.

You know, the “good vibes only” mantra.

Except in reality, what happened to me was the opposite; I sped past the joy and got stuck in the darkness.

In trying to avoid the pain, I ended up prolonging it.

When we resist pain we experience suffering. What we resist, persists.

We resist those valleys because they’re painful. Pain sucks.

Why wouldn’t we want to avoid it?

But what if that thought was the very thing keeping us stuck there?

Both the summit and valley teach us what we need to grow and move forward on the path.

Joy and pain are both necessary parts of life. Pain is a powerful teacher.

And it doesn’t go away if we ignore it.

It gets louder.

I was taught to ignore the pain; to numb, escape, or master it. Never to learn from it.

It took me almost dying to finally wake up and look at it differently.

The pain isn’t happening to me.

It’s here for me.

To teach me something important.

Something I’ve been ignoring.

Something I need for the path ahead.

Can I listen to what it’s trying to tell me?
